Women, especially over the age of 50, are more at risk for developing osteoporosis. This disease is 4 times more likely in women than men. The longer life span and thinner and lighter bones of women are the main osteoporosis risk factors. Men can also have osteoporosis but are less common.
If your immediate ancestors like your parents or grandparents had this condition, then you are also at risk of developing this disease.
Bodyweight and Bone Structure
People who are thin and petite can easily develop osteoporosis, as they have less bone to lose than those who are with larger frames and more bodyweight. Therefore, both men and women who have a thin figure are at high risk to be affected by this disease than others.
If you had a fracture in the past then your bones may not be as strong as before, hence they will be more vulnerable for osteoporosis.
Research reveals that Asian and Caucasian women are at high risk to develop osteoporosis than women of other ethnic groups.
Certain diseases like rheumatoid arthritis can be a trigger for osteoporosis too.
Some medications can also cause osteoporosis. For example, the use of steroids like prednisone for a long time as a part of your prescription medications will boost the chance of getting this disease.
Smoking is bad for your health and it can also damage your bones. If you are a smoker, it is more likely for you to get this disease than a non-smoker. Hence try to get rid of this bad habit as soon as possible.
Overconsumption of alcohol can cause thinning of bones which may result in osteoporosis.
